Camponeschi, Hiltbrand and Garcia Lopez the winners at Zuera

Confirmation in the CIK-FIA European KZ Championship, upheaval in the CIK-FIA European KZ2 Championship and a successful launch for the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy, are the main conclusions of the Competition at Zuera. The implementation of the new front fairing attachments promoted very fair Races in association with the action of the sporting authorities.

The good weather, not always hot and sometimes windy, accompanied the schedule of the CIK-FIA Competition at the long and fast Circuito Internacional Zuera, near Zaragoza. After the launch of the European KZ and KZ2 Championship at Sarno, Italy, the Spanish track tests other skills needed by technicians and drivers, before the conclusion of the European season which will take place in Belgium in mid-July. The declining mid-season entry remains a factor that deserves consideration in terms of choice of tracks and the promotion of the Competition. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the 2015 fairing fasteners has significantly improved the sportingness of the Competition in relation to how it was at Sarno, in addition to the strong involvement of the CIK-FIA officials.

Camponeschi en route to the title in KZ

Already a winner at Sarno, Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex-B’stone) triumphed again against his teammate Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex-B’stone), the World Champion of 2014. And yet the task was not easy, as Ardigo started with pole position in Qualifying Practice before dominating the Qualifying Heats. But Camponeschi won with ease in the Prefinal prior to confronting Ardigo more seriously in the Final. The two official Tony Racing Team Drivers took turns leading the race, Camponeschi finally having the last word. Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions-TM Racing-B’stone) completed the podium after a penalty for Jordon Lennox-Lamb (BirelART-Parilla-B’stone) and those three Drivers also occupy the top three places in the provisional classification of the Championship. With two victories, Camponeschi now has an advantage that will be difficult to overcome for his rivals. Also noteworthy is the increased competitiveness of other drivers such as Anthony Abbasse (Sodi-TM Racing-B’stone), 2nd in Qualifying Practice and 3rd in the Prefinal, and Patrik Hajek (Praga-Parilla-B’stone) 4th in the Championship.

Hiltbrand wins at home

The second Competition of the European KZ2 Championship produced many surprises during its different phases. Thomas Laurent (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) began with the fastest time of the Qualifying Practice. Then his teammate Paolo Besancenez (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) took the lead of the class after numerous Qualifying Heats. Finally, Francesco Celenta (Parolin-TM Racing-LeCont) won the Prefinal. Celenta also crossed the Final finish line in 1st place, but a penalty of 5” for a jumped start gave victory to Pedro Hiltbrand (CRGSPA-Maxter-LeCont) who had previously performed excellently. Another protagonist in the Competition, Joel Johansson (Energy-TM Racing-LeCont) was ranked in 2nd place ahead of Besancenez, while Luca Corberi (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) was ahead of Jorge Pescador (Praga-Parilla-LeCont) in the top five. The Championship leader when arriving in Spain, Andreas Fasberg lost everything for attempting to escape a penalty. Trying to replace his front fairing attachment earned him an exclusion from the Competition. Now Hiltbrand is 1st in the provisional ranking with 52 points ahead of three drivers with an identical score of 35 points, Johansson, Besancenez and Corberi.

Despite a very fast layout that is not ideal for the young hopefuls of this one-make formula to showcase the talents of tomorrow, the first Competition of the year went very well and was attended by 50 drivers from 35 nations, including newcomers like South Korea, Mozambique and the Dominican Republic. Penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct were given for dropped front fairings, the attachments of which are designed to calm excessive tempers. Good Drivers were able to show off their skills. The Briton Alfie Brown stood out in the Qualifying Heats and won the Prefinal, but the Spanish driver, selected by the FIA “Women in Motorsport” Commission, Marta Garcia won brilliantly in the Final against Brown, the Russian Zakhar Slutskiy and the Spaniard Xavier Lloveras Brunet. These four drivers are in the same order in the provisional Trophy in front of another Spaniard, Alejandro Lopez Lahoz.
